Unfortunately, yet another phishing scam victim has seen their NFTs stolen, and in this case, it happened to be two MAYCs and eight Cool Cats. It came from the NFT owner clicking a fake link to the recently hyped-up Goblintown NFT collection.
The victim of this particular scam was a Twitter user, @topshotkief, who had a total of ten of their NFTs stolen. This came after he clicked a fake link to the Goblintown NFT collection. He is an OG Cool Cats holder and had eight of his beloved NFTs from this collection stolen. As well as this, two Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFTs.
Now, he is appealing to OpenSea and LooksRare for help as the scammer “stole everything” from them.
People in the Twitter comments section are questioning whether Kief simply clicked the link, or connected his wallet. Also, whether the scam happened when he was on his desktop or mobile. These questions remain unanswered until now.
It’s important to note that this scam isn’t the fault of Goblintown itself, or potentially even the phishing scam victim. It was simply a hacker’s creation that must have been so similar to the original collection’s website that it was impossible to tell the difference for the victim.
It goes without saying that it is entirely essential to keep yourself safe within the NFT space. People can do this by reading links character-by-character. By doing this, you ensure that it’s the official link advertised on a project’s Twitter or Discord. Also, it is important to pick up more details and knowledge from every scam story we hear about.
Beyond this, it is also recommended for people to keep valuable NFTs in a cold wallet, like those from the industry leader, Ledger for example. This will help out on a security front and reduce (not get rid of) the risk of losing NFTs and becoming a phishing scam victim.
